For every one that has ever wanted to be a fisherman one of the first things that the old fishermen will tell you that you need to do is to learn some basic knots that will help you with your line and possibly save your life if you need to use them like on a boat. For the experienced fisherman there are several knots that are basic to them like the slip knot and the sailors knot as well as how to tie a hook properly. With all knots you will need to make sure that you leave a tail or long enough end that when tightened it does not come loose. You will need to learn also how not to leave too long of a tail and how to keep your knots clean as a bunch of line will cause snags and also can keep fish from biting. Another important reason to knowing about knots is if you are going in a boat and need to know how to secure things to the boat and the boat to a dock or other place that you might want to tie up too. Learning basic knots is a great skill to have and can possibly save your life in some situations, it will also be extremely helpful in making sure that a great catch does not get away after all your hard work fishing . One of the most important things that you will need to know if you are a fisherman is that of some basic knot tying. Knots are important not only if you are tying your boat off but also for tying leaders or tying your hooks up. There are specific knots for all kinds of different things and it is wise to learn them and be proficient at tying them before you ever go fishing. You can always buy prettied hooks but you will still need to attach the leaders to your line and if they are tied incorrectly can come undone with a fish on. The other thing that will be important is to make sure that the tails or end of the line is not too long or too short on the knots. Basic knots like the slip knot and the sailors knots are good knots to know and will be useful in all kinds of situations. The proper knot can make all the difference in your fishing experience and most avid fishermen know several different knots that can be tied in different situations. If you are using a boat you will definitely want to know knot tying so that your boat is not taken away by the water or that an anchor or other gear is not lost overboard because the knot used did not hold. Knots and knot tying are very important not just in fishing but in all sorts of situations encountered.

TECH SAVVY

In the world today there are all sorts of advancements taking part in almost every area of our lives and in the area of fishing it is no different. There are technology advancements everyday in the knowledge of fish and how they behave and how to catch them and there are literally thousands of advancements in the equipment that we use to catch fish. For example, one technological advancement is that in the area of fish finders or depth finders that send out sonar like signals that help spot many of the schools of fish that are running in the area. Not only will the fish finders tell you where they are at but also tell you how deep to drop your line in order to get it in front of them another advancement is in the actual gear that you use like lighter poles and better material that the poles are made of in order to keep them from breaking and also feeling the fish while you are playing it. Also the design of lures has come a long way in recent years making them more attractive to the fish. Reels have advanced with gears on them that allow the reel to operate better and more efficiently and also not break down as well. There are all sorts of technological advancements that have made fishing easier and also the equipment more durable than ever while still giving you a full fishing experience and the joy of fishing.

KNOTTY FISHING

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

No matter what type of fishing your doing anytime you are around the water it is important to know how to tie correct knots. Whether you’re tying a hook or lure or are securing a boat the proper knot and ability to tie them can make all the difference in the world. Knot tying is a skill that is good to be mastered in whatever you do not just fishing but if you don’t know how to tie knots properly it can often result in hooks coming loose and losing many fish. Basic knots such as the sailors knot, the slip knot and the square knot are knots everyone should know and will provide themselves practical not just in the fishing world but in everyday life.

Tying a hook properly will allow the line to stay attached to the hook without the line slipping and no matter how hard the fish fights the knot will not come undone. The line may break and the fish will get away but if the hook is tied properly the hook will stay attached to the line and increase your chances of bringing in your fish. Knowing other basic knots is helpful if you are on a boat and need to secure an item or items. On a boat, ropes are called lines and knowing how to tie down cargo or even your boat to the dock is extremely important. Knot tying is definitely a valuable skill and anyone who has been on the water long will agree.

Fishing Knots

There are a great number of knots that fisherman use to attach fishing line to hooks, lures and different sizes of line. To name a few knots that are probably well known to each of you but there maybe some new fisherman out there reading about knots for the first time and they are: Improved Clinch Knot, Palomar Knot, Surgeon’s Knot and Uni-Knot. Let us look at each of these knots.

Improved Clinch Knot

The improved clinch knot is used to tie fishing line to fishing lures, hooks, swivel and artificial flies. If you learn to tie only one knot, this is the one I suggest to learn. Once you have this knot accomplished you can attach your fishing line to any hook, lure and even another line.

Palomar Knot

This knot is used for attaching fishing line to hooks, lures, swivel and so on. This knot is good for all kinds of light fishing lines. It retains 80 to 85 % of the original line strength, even monofilaments. It is nearly impossible to pull out. With practice, this knot can be tied in the dark or with cold hands.

Surgeon’s Knot

The surgeon’s knot is a modification of the reef knot. It has an added twist to one of the lines to add more friction to the knot. It is used in fly fishing in tying quilts. The surgeon’s knot can fail if one of working ends pulls away from the standing end closest to the knot.

Uni-Knot

The uni knot is a multi purpose knot in fishing and can be used to fix the line to the arbor of the reel, joining lines and attaching lures, hooks and so on to your line. The knot works well with all monofilament lines and retains 85 to 90 % the breaking strength.

I personal use the Improved Clinch Knot as my preferred knot for all the knots that I need.

Welcome to www.fishingthis.com

Welcome to my new Web site that will deal with everything with fishing. Why would I want to start a new site dealing with fishing when there are so many on the web already? I have just retired and find that I have the time now to get into my life long interest of fishing and looking forward to giving out useful info and getting information out that other sites are not. I am also looking forward to receiving comments on places, preferred baits, guide services and whatever you as a reader would like to share with others.

Please continue to check back to see what topics are being added continuesly along with any new comments that have posted by others. If you fish we want to hear from you. A few of categories that will be up for discussion will be: safe boating classes, different types of knots used and favorite fishing spots to just name a few.

As a youngster I did as much fishing as I could and even worked in a bait shop (for free) just to be around people who fished and always had a good story to tell and some of those stories I would say where a bit of a tall tale,  if you know what I mean but as I became a nine to five guy there just didn’t seem to be the time for me to be fishing. While you are here and checked out the articles, take a minute and look at the Shop Tab and check out the stores that we have. As we all know, you get your best deals on line and without leaving home to stand in a checkout line when you could be sharing fishing with like minded people.

Enjoy and be save fishing,

William
