LAKE FISHING

There are all sorts of fishing that is available to anyone that wants to go out and participate in it and there are all sorts of fish that can be caught that only exist in lakes. Many species of Bass can only be found in certain lakes and there are some like catfish that can be found in all sorts of bodies of water. Perch is another one that is primarily found in lakes although there are plenty of sea perch and seas bass in the ocean if that is what you want to fish for. Walleye is another fish that can be found in lakes and is a great game fish to pursue. Lake fishing can be done from docks, the bank or as most prefer to be done while trolling in boats. There are those that also like to just go out in the boats and cast a line with a bobber and just sit back and relax. Lake fishing is fun and kids really enjoy it as it is a great starting spot for the beginning fishermen and women to learn about the art of fishing. You will want to check your game regulations to make sure that the lakes are open and what the fishing season is for them. Many lakes are open year around and some are only open a limited time. There are also many lakes that are stocked with fish on a yearly basis and are fun to fish.

We as a society have a thirst for knowledge and the more that we know about something the better we feel about doing it. In the world of fishing it can be effectively claimed that fishing is a science and there are many parts to fishing and catching fish. It is not just throwing your hook in the water and a fish connecting, although this is how it feels in certain places. Fishing studies can show you when the fish will run in a certain area what their population is and in a degree how they are going to behave. Fishing science is also not just all about the fish but also includes understanding water conditions and when fish will move upstream or around. It can also tell you their eating habits and when they are more likely to bite. Studies and science will also give you an inclination of how they eat and what they have been feeding on as a diet. There is a lot to learn in fishing science and that information can be gathered through seminars and classes that are offered on fishing all over the country. Most of these seminars can give you up to date information on the different species of fish. Fishing science and fish studies will also be able to estimate the size of runs that will be coming into an area like a river or stream. If you want to be a good fisherman learn about fishing science.

WEIGHTING IN

In almost all avenues of fishing the use of weight is used in one capacity or another. Weights are used primarily for getting the lure down in the water and keeping the line from just floating on the top of the water. There are all sorts of different weights that are used such as split shots which are little balls of lead with a place to clamp them on your line to long pieces of lead that can be cut off in different lengths depending on the water being fished to measured balls and pyramids of lead that can be tied to your line. Different fishing requires different types of lead and the lead is important if you want to get your line and lure down to the fish that you are fishing for. These weights come in a variety of sizes from small weights to medium weights to large weights that are primarily used in deep sea fishing and similar conditions. Lead or weights can also be used to slow your line down in river fishing if you are in a particularly fast current and want to control the speed of your line moving down the river. Most of the weight used for fishing today is made from lead. This is the best source of weighting your line down and it is also the most cost effective method as well. All fishing stores carry weights to use for fishing in whatever waters you choose to fish.

TALL TALES

If you have ever been around a group of fishermen for very long you are sure to hear plenty of stories about all the fish that they have caught and you will most definitely hear plenty of tall tales of fishing of the ones that got away and how they danced across the water casting a shadow a mile long because they were so big. These fish tales or fish lies are part of the fishing experience and no fishing trip is ever complete without at least a few fishing stories that the fishermen want to tell. Most of the stories can be a bit of an exaggeration but that is all part of the deal when it comes to fishing. For as long as men have been fishing there have been tall tales associated with the sport and they are just as important in many cases as the catch or the trip itself. Kids will gather around just to hear the stories of the fishing trips of their family and hear how the record catch was on the line for hours before it finally got away leaving the fisherman exhausted from the battle that the giant fish managed to win. No matter where you go in the fishing world there will always be plenty of fishing stories that will be told and repeated with a little more flavor each time that the story is repeated. Fishing stories are part of the culture of the fisherman.

SCIENCE

For those that want to get ahead in their fishing experience and want to take advantage of everything that they can the use of science can play a major role in fishing. Fishing is a science as there are all sorts of fishing studies that can tell about things like the migration of the fish, how big the projected runs of fish species will be coming into the waters, what they are in regards to size and many other important factors in how fish behave. This can be important ion looking for where the fish might lay in a particular river or stream. The other advantage of fishing science is looking at the water conditions and weather such as if the waterways will be effected by an El Nino current and water temperature. There are a lot of aspects of science that can be applied to fishing as the Department of Fisheries also rely on these studies to help determine if a river or lake should be closed or limited and what the catch limit should be on a particular water way. Fishing science will also tell you when is the best time to fish for certain fish and when they might be coming up the river for example like with salmon and steelhead and when the spring runs, the summer runs and the winter runs will start to happen and when the majority of the fish will be in the water for the fisherman to go after.

There are those that like to fish and then there are those that produce the equipment to fish and not that the two don’t intermingle but those that are into the supplying of fishing equipment are using more and more technology today to help the angler get more and bigger fish. Fishing technology has come a long ways in what it has to offer like fish finders that can locate schools of fish and help you know what is out there as well as how deep you need to run your lines in order to hook the fish. The design of lures has come a long way as well as many of the manufacturers are constantly looking at ways to make their lures not only more attractive but also better in keeping a fish on. One are of huge change is that in the area of reel advancement that has allowed the fishermen to not only cast farther but also offers new easy working gears in the reels that prolongs the life of a reel as well as make it easier with bigger fish to crank them in. Many of the big game fish have gears just like a bicycle gear that can allow the angler to not have to work as hard while fighting the fish and the drag components on reels are getting easier and more automatic to adjust while you are fighting the fish. Technology in fishing equipment has come a long way.

SMELLY

For those that want to go after fishing with a passion there is no better way than to increase the odds by using something that will not only allow the fish to see the bait but to smell it as well. Scented bait has been used for ages and there all sorts of scented baits that can be used and result in greater catches. Baits like dough bait and blood bait are great ways to lure fish to your line and old favorites like corn and chicken liver do an excellent job in getting the attention of the fish, especially bottom fish if that is what you are fishing for. Scented bait odors can also be bought to put on lures allowing them to have the same odor in the water. You will need to check your fishing regulations as some of them cannot be used in some waters and for certain fish. Fishing with scented bait will increase your chances of catching fish in that it will entice two senses and can actually draw fish from a distance to your lure or hook. This is different than chumming although many scented baits are used for the same purpose but in many instances is illegal. Scented bait can also be great to capture salmon and many of the large game fish while deep sea fishing as the fish are always on the prowl for a source of food and will be drawn to the scent of the bait.

For the avid fisherman there is nothing like going to their favorite hot fishing spot. The anticipation is high and the level of success seems to be higher. Ask any fisherman about where he likes to go and he will tell you about that favorite fishing spot that he is sure to achieve success at. These spots can be on a lake, in the ocean, or on a river but to the fisherman that fishes it regularly it is sure to guarantee lots of action even if he does not land his catch. For those that like rivers or any other body of water there are always certain fishing spots that many fishermen know about. It might be a hole in the river, a buoy on the ocean or particular area, or even a spot on a lake that has the fisherman pining to go there. Fishermen are also always looking for new fishing spots that they feel lucky about or look good to fish. Fishing is about finding where the fish like to lay and then getting your line in those areas and these spots are what the fishermen dream about. Every water area has its own spots that are hot to fish and they can sometime change over a season or year as the water changes and the fish migrate to new areas but there are still some that year after year seem to draw you back to fish again and again producing your catch.

For those that want to learn about fishing or consider themselves an expert angler the one thing that will be of significance to you will be the clarity of the water. Water clarity plays a huge role in fishing for a number of reasons. If the water is cloudy or has too much silt in it the fish cannot only not see the lures or bait but they also cannot smell them. If the water is a little murky it is best. It allows the fish to see without being able to see the angler. You do not want the fish to be able to see you if possible as it often scares the fish and if the sun is out and the water is clear you want to make sure that your shadow is not cast over the hole that you are wanting to fish if you can help it at all. Water clarity will play a big role in the success of your fishing and knowing how to read the water and how to take advantage of the water is a great skill to posses. These skills alone can make all the difference in getting skunked or catching your limit. There are different ways to fish depending upon the water clarity and if the water is too murky you might want to look for another place to fish or wait for another day to go after your catch. Clarity can easily determine your success.

BOATING

For those that are fishermen and like to use a boat as their means of working rivers and lakes and even the ocean changes in the regulations of boat use are coming quickly and for the most part are well needed. For too long the boaters or skippers of the boats have been unlicensed and have no practical knowledge of boating rules and regulations. Because of this there are a mounting number of accidents that occur each year on the countries waterways many of them were accidents that did not need to happen if the driver would have known what he was doing. States are starting to require that those who own or operate boats are to take boating classes to learn safe handling as well as rules and regulations of waterways. Basically these are classes to help the boater and those around them to operate safely and be able to foresee potential problems. The United States Coast Guard and the Coat Guard Auxiliary offer boating classes that meet the requirements of what the boat owners and operators need to know like the difference between inland and out-land waters as well as things like basic handling, who has the right of way and even some navigation classes to help reduce the problems that are occurring and to help people practice safe boating. This should go a long way for the fishermen to have a safer and more enjoyable experience while fishing on the many water ways.
