For those that are fishermen and like to use a boat as their means of working rivers and lakes and even the ocean changes in the regulations of boat use are coming quickly and for the most part are well needed. For too long the boaters or skippers of the boats have been unlicensed and have no practical knowledge of boating rules and regulations. Because of this there are a mounting number of accidents that occur each year on the countries waterways many of them were accidents that did not need to happen if the driver would have known what he was doing. States are starting to require that those who own or operate boats are to take boating classes to learn safe handling as well as rules and regulations of waterways. Basically these are classes to help the boater and those around them to operate safely and be able to foresee potential problems. The United States Coast Guard and the Coat Guard Auxiliary offer boating classes that meet the requirements of what the boat owners and operators need to know like the difference between inland and out-land waters as well as things like basic handling, who has the right of way and even some navigation classes to help reduce the problems that are occurring and to help people practice safe boating. This should go a long way for the fishermen to have a safer and more enjoyable experience while fishing on the many water ways.

For those that like to fish there is a big similarity to part of hunting and that is the search. Not just the search for fish but the search for the new spot that the fish might be lying in. In the ocean most of the commercial captains will stay on the radio and tell you what new spots that the fish are biting in each day and in the river fishing world a river can change from year to year and the spots that were good one year might not even exist the next year or be no good and the fisherman will need to look for new spots to fish and find their trophy. This is one of the pieces that make fishing so intriguing. Finding the new spot with lots of action and plenty to talk about later after the fishing is over. No matter what body of water you like to fish whether it is a lake, a river or stream and even the ocean the fish will migrate and it is up to the fisherman to figure it out and find the holes that have the fish. It is all guess work for the most part but the experienced angler can look at the water and see where the best spots usually are and where the fish might be at on a particular body of water. Finding new spots is all part of the game and can be fun for the fisherman.

Fall is a great time to fish for bass. You will find that the fish have a lot less stain on them, as a lot of the fishermen have changed to hunting, and they are getting ready for the lean times to come with winter ice in the north and temperature changes in the other areas. You will need to change your mode of finding where the bass are going to be. The best way to find the bass during this season is to find the bait fish that the bass are eating.
During this time you will find that bass are most likely feeding on shad and shad have a tendency to move up stream, rivers or creeks that feed the water you are fishing. For the best luck in landing a bass you will want to use the size and color of lure that best match a shad. Now if you do not see shad than look for other baits that my be in the area, minnows, crawfish or bluegills.
Keep an eye on the water temperature. Bass can find the warmth they are looking for just about any place they are feeding. Don’t get upset by the falling leaves that get tangled on your kook. They are a great place for bass to am bus from and they are a great source for food. Ants, worms and microorganism can be found in those leaves so make sure you don’t for get to work around those that have accumulated on the water.
Don’t forget your top water baits. Keep one at hand so you are ready for the bass that are running bait fish to the surface as that is when the bass are the most active. Artificial bait that are shine on the side with dark tops of green and blue are the best for this type of runs.
So don’t put up the gear for winter and for get about the bass fishing of the fall time. Get out there and catch the big one.
For those that have spent any time fishing there is one thing that you can be sure of and that is that all fishermen have a favorite spot to fish and that they usually will tell you that they can almost always catch fish in that spot. Fishing spots are sacred to the avid fishermen and even if there are plenty of people fishing the spot it will make him feel special when he is fishing there. Usually it is the place where there is lots of action on the pole and the fish seem to be there all the time no matter what type of fishing it is. It can be in the deep blue sea, the lakes or the rivers and streams each place has a favorite spot and once you find your own particular one you will want to come back over and over again. Fishing is unique in that most fishermen seem to feel they need a little luck in their quest and a favorite hole or favorite spot seems to give that to them regardless of anything else going on. Ask any angler about a favorite spot and they will quickly tell you about how great the fishing is there and how they can land one there almost anytime and under any condition. Many of the favorite spots are not just for one fisherman but for many that fish the same river and streams. Favorite spots are to be cherished by fishermen.
For every one that has ever wanted to be a fisherman one of the first things that the old fishermen will tell you that you need to do is to learn some basic knots that will help you with your line and possibly save your life if you need to use them like on a boat. For the experienced fisherman there are several knots that are basic to them like the slip knot and the sailors knot as well as how to tie a hook properly. With all knots you will need to make sure that you leave a tail or long enough end that when tightened it does not come loose. You will need to learn also how not to leave too long of a tail and how to keep your knots clean as a bunch of line will cause snags and also can keep fish from biting. Another important reason to knowing about knots is if you are going in a boat and need to know how to secure things to the boat and the boat to a dock or other place that you might want to tie up too. Learning basic knots is a great skill to have and can possibly save your life in some situations, it will also be extremely helpful in making sure that a great catch does not get away after all your hard work fishing . Knot tying is a skill to learn and not just for fishing.
One of the most important things that you can do when your fishing is to know and understand what the effect of the clarity of the water will have on your fishing trip. Different levels of clarity in the water will help determine what is the best way to fish particular water. Cloudy water can be fished one way while murky water can be fished another and clear water fished completely different because if you can see the fish then the fish can see you as well.
You would always like to see a little color in the water in most instances and if the water is too murky then you more than likely will have a difficult time because the fish will not be able to see what you are using to get their attention and get them to bite. This is where scented bait can come into play.
Water clarity can play a big part in your fishing experience and knowing how to read the water will be a big help. For those that are fishing in exceptionally clear water you want to remember if at all possible to keep your shadow behind you or try to fish upstream of a hole if you are on a river. Learning through experience is one way to learn but if you can ask someone or attend a fishing clinic as they usually talk about clarity of water and what seems to work best in certain situations and conditions. Clarity can make all the difference.
For those that want some real fun and excitement in their fishing experience there is nothing like fishing in a river for a challenge. Whether you are on the bank or going down river in a boat there are all sorts of great fishing experiences that can be had on the many rivers of the United States and Canada. River fishing for the most part is a bit more difficult than lake fishing as the rivers is prone to water changes and issues like muddy water can hamper your experiences. Catfish, Garr, Steelhead, Salmon and a host of other fish are available in rivers all over. While many take guided tours down rivers to fish there are all sorts of people that are just as happy to fish from the banks and in some rivers the only way to get to certain spots is to walk in to a hole and fish it. River fishing provides plenty of challenges that are not found elsewhere and if you fish from the bank it is wise to know how to cast for most rivers and read holes looking for where the fish will lay. Some rivers can be excellent sources of wild fish that are native to the area and they will challenge even the best fisherman as they look for deep holes in the river where the fish might be and are waiting for your lure or hook to come through. Many who fish rivers have favorite spots.
Safety-pin is the most versatile bass lures made. They can effectively fish almost any depth and cover situation and with the possible exception of the plastic worm can be labeled “All Around Lure.”
Spinnerbaits are available in a staggering array of sizes, types and configurations and this can cause some confusion for the angler when it comes to selecting the right one for the task at hand. The confusion can be halted if the angler understands that there are five basic categories of safety-pin spinnerbaits and that each one has proven to be more effective under certain conditions than the others. The five categories are: single spin, tandem spin, long arm, short arm and flexible cable arm.
The single spin has only one blade and be in any size and type. This is not quite as weedless as the tandem spins and are best in sparser cover. They tend to run deeper and produce a more distinct vibration that can be felt through the rod. This makes it best for deeper water, slower retrieves and used as a drop bait.
The tandem spin features two blades mounted in line. The larger blade is mounted in the rear and the smaller blade in the front. It tends to be more weedless so it is better for heavier cover. They seem to to run a bit shallower due to the second blade holding them closer to the surface when retrieved at the same speed as the single blade. Most experts don’t fish this bait much deeper than eight to ten feet unless they are working with a bait in the half-ounce or heavier range.
Long-arm spinnerbait is one that the blade-holding arm extends back as far as the hook. This protects the hook and makes the bait more weedless. They can be either single or tandem bladed but you will find most pros using the tandem blade in heavier cover.
Short-arm is one where the blade doesn’t reach the hook. They can be either single or tandem blade and the difference between the short and long arm is the ability to hook the fish better and be weedless but not as so the long-arm. So this bait is better for sparse cover, top choice for fishing deeper, more open structures especially with a large single blade.
The flexible cable models dispense with the wire blade arm. This makes the most weedless model for thick, clinging cover but not good for hard cover so you will want to leave them in the box when working on wood cover.
Now you know what safety-pin spinner bait to use for the different types of cover or no cover to use to catch the bass you are looking for.
There are all sorts of options when it comes to what you want to put on your line to catch fish. Some people like to use artificial bait, some like to use flies and others are committed to live bait like worms and leeches as live bait to catch fish. Live bait is very popular because it is the natural food that the fish are looking for and have a greater chance of attracting the fish both with its scent and the action that it has under water. For those that like live bait there are plenty of options like the above mentioned as well as minnows and for some big fish the use of things like Tuna for game fish like Marlins). Depending upon what you are fishing for will determine the type of bait that needs to be used. Regardless of what you use you will need to check local game regulations for the waters you want to fish to see if there are any restrictions. Some waterways do not allow live bait but this is usually only in streams, rivers, and certain lakes and only for certain fish or for periods of time. For those that like to use live bait the options are endless and can usually be found in the local sporting goods or fishing shops in your area. It is always wise to check and see what the fish are biting on if you can to help increasing the odds of your catch.
