BOATING

Friday, December 7th, 2012

For those that are fishermen and like to use a boat as their means of working rivers and lakes and even the ocean changes in the regulations of boat use are coming quickly and for the most part are well needed. For too long the boaters or skippers of the boats have been unlicensed and have no practical knowledge of boating rules and regulations. Because of this there are a mounting number of accidents that occur each year on the countries waterways many of them were accidents that did not need to happen if the driver would have known what he was doing. States are starting to require that those who own or operate boats are to take boating classes to learn safe handling as well as rules and regulations of waterways. Basically these are classes to help the boater and those around them to operate safely and be able to foresee potential problems. The United States Coast Guard and the Coat Guard Auxiliary offer boating classes that meet the requirements of what the boat owners and operators need to know like the difference between inland and out-land waters as well as things like basic handling, who has the right of way and even some navigation classes to help reduce the problems that are occurring and to help people practice safe boating. This should go a long way for the fishermen to have a safer and more enjoyable experience while fishing on the many water ways.

NEW SPOT

Thursday, November 22nd, 2012

For those that like to fish there is a big similarity to part of hunting and that is the search. Not just the search for fish but the search for the new spot that the fish might be lying in. In the ocean most of the commercial captains will stay on the radio and tell you what new spots that the fish are biting in each day and in the river fishing world a river can change from year to year and the spots that were good one year might not even exist the next year or be no good and the fisherman will need to look for new spots to fish and find their trophy. This is one of the pieces that make fishing so intriguing. Finding the new spot with lots of action and plenty to talk about later after the fishing is over. No matter what body of water you like to fish whether it is a lake, a river or stream and even the ocean the fish will migrate and it is up to the fisherman to figure it out and find the holes that have the fish. It is all guess work for the most part but the experienced angler can look at the water and see where the best spots usually are and where the fish might be at on a particular body of water. Finding new spots is all part of the game and can be fun for the fisherman.

Fall Bass Fishing

Friday, November 16th, 2012

Fall is a great time to fish for bass. You will find that the fish have a lot less stain on them, as a lot of the fishermen have changed to hunting, and they are getting ready for the lean times to come with winter ice in the north and temperature changes in the other areas. You will need to change your mode of finding where the bass are going to be. The best way to find the bass during this season is to find the bait fish that the bass are eating.

During this time you will find that bass are most likely feeding on shad and shad have a tendency to move up stream, rivers or creeks that feed the water you are fishing. For the best luck in landing a bass you will want to use the size and color of lure that best match a shad. Now if you do not see shad than look for other baits that my be in the area, minnows, crawfish or bluegills.

Keep an eye on the water temperature. Bass can find the warmth they are looking for just about any place they are feeding. Don’t get upset by the falling leaves that get tangled on your kook. They are a great place for bass to am bus from and they are a great source for food. Ants, worms and microorganism can be found in those leaves so make sure you don’t for get to work around those that have accumulated on the water.

Don’t forget your top water baits. Keep one at hand so you are ready for the bass that are running bait fish to the surface as that is when the bass are the most active. Artificial bait that are shine on the side with dark tops of green and blue are the best for this type of runs.

So don’t put up the gear for winter and for get about the bass fishing of the fall time. Get out there and catch the big one.

FAVORITES

Tuesday, November 13th, 2012

For those that have spent any time fishing there is one thing that you can be sure of and that is that all fishermen have a favorite spot to fish and that they usually will tell you that they can almost always catch fish in that spot. Fishing spots are sacred to the avid fishermen and even if there are plenty of people fishing the spot it will make him feel special when he is fishing there. Usually it is the place where there is lots of action on the pole and the fish seem to be there all the time no matter what type of fishing it is. It can be in the deep blue sea, the lakes or the rivers and streams each place has a favorite spot and once you find your own particular one you will want to come back over and over again. Fishing is unique in that most fishermen seem to feel they need a little luck in their quest and a favorite hole or favorite spot seems to give that to them regardless of anything else going on. Ask any angler about a favorite spot and they will quickly tell you about how great the fishing is there and how they can land one there almost anytime and under any condition. Many of the favorite spots are not just for one fisherman but for many that fish the same river and streams. Favorite spots are to be cherished by fishermen.

KNOTS

Thursday, November 1st, 2012

For every one that has ever wanted to be a fisherman one of the first things that the old fishermen will tell you that you need to do is to learn some basic knots that will help you with your line and possibly save your life if you need to use them like on a boat. For the experienced fisherman there are several knots that are basic to them like the slip knot and the sailors knot as well as how to tie a hook properly. With all knots you will need to make sure that you leave a tail or long enough end that when tightened it does not come loose. You will need to learn also how not to leave too long of a tail and how to keep your knots clean as a bunch of line will cause snags and also can keep fish from biting. Another important reason to knowing about knots is if you are going in a boat and need to know how to secure things to the boat and the boat to a dock or other place that you might want to tie up too. Learning basic knots is a great skill to have and can possibly save your life in some situations, it will also be extremely helpful in making sure that a great catch does not get away after all your hard work fishing . Knot tying is a skill to learn and not just for fishing.

RIVERS

Thursday, October 25th, 2012

For those that like a little bit more leaser to their fishing experience, then river fishing might just hit the bill. There are all kinds of river fishing from casting a line and watching for a bit , to trout lines and to going down the river in a boat bottle line fishing. River fishing is a different type of fishing that cannot be compared to lake or pond fishing, thou the same kind of fish can be caught. River fishing is usually done from the bank by most people and with some a set of waders to get out in the water and stay dry. Many of the best fish available are fished for in rivers like steelhead,  salmon, small mouth bass, large mouth bass, Gar, catfish and carp. The unique thing about river fishing is the clarity of the water as it will play a huge role in the type of lures and bait that you use and how you fish the water. Muddy water is not good as fish will not be able to see the lure but is still good for for live bait. Muddy water will definitely hamper your ability to catch fish with a lure. A little cloudy color in the water is best and you want to fish a river right after a big rain for the best results because as the water is high the fish will come in closer to the bank to feed and as it lowers it is not as easy to catch them as the food supply goes down.

River fishing can be a great challenge even to the best angler out there fishing.

LAKES

Friday, October 19th, 2012

There are all sorts of places to fish and different fishermen like to fish different waters. One of the most popular and the easiest place to learn about fishing is in a lake. Lakes can be fished from a dock or on the shore but the most common way to fish a lake is in a boat. Certain fish can only be found in lakes like several species of bass, catfish, perch and walleye are best fished for in lakes. This is not the only place to find these fish it is where they are most commonly fished for. Sockeye salmon are also fished for in lakes because that is where they return to spawn. Lake fishing is also a great place to get kids involved in fishing and many lakes are planted each year with thousands of fish right before the opening of fishing season. This planting makes it easier to catch fish which is what fishing is all about. If you want to have a great time with the family do some lake fishing and when you are done you can have a picnic or barbecue on the beach afterwards. There are many fishermen who keep their fishing just to lake fishing and have great success each and every year. Lake fishing is different than river fishing and does not always require casting like on a river or stream. You can cast but you can also let your line sit there and relax a bit.

Spinner Bait Fishing

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

Let’s continue to look at spinner bait fishing a little more. Most guys like to use medium/heavy action rods in the 6 to 7 1/2 foot range. Spinning or casting gear can be used but casting is often favored. Monofilament line in the 14 to 20 pound range works the best but you will find the pro using braided line, especially when fishing single spins deep.

With the proper equipment, success with spinners can be as easy as casting and reeling but there are some specific retrieval techniques to use under certain conditions. Here are a few of those techniques. The slow-rolling which is used in hard cover. Downed trees, rock, or hard reeds and can be used for deep submerged points. The bait is casted and allowed to sink to become in contact with the cover and retrieved slowly staying in contact with the cover. Than you have the yo-yoing used to cover sharpe sloping banks and points. Here the bait is cast to the shallow end of the cover and retrieved back to the boat in a series of pumping actions. The buzz and drop retrieval is simply a technique used by a fisherman looking for holding areas where a bass would be like, open pockets in vegetation, a stump, dock pilings, weed lines or any place just screaming “bass”. You cast pass the spot and retrieve the bait to cause a wake or bulge to create a sound that a bass will hear to let him know something is coming but he can’t see. When you get to the spot you just let the bait drop to see if you get the bass to bit. Skipping is when your bait will mimic minnows moving in vegetation. They skip across the water when a feeding bass is near. Just cast your bait  near the action and make it skip across the water.

When you are confronted by a predatory and you turn and run the predatory is instinctively to attack. Same with a holding bass, so we just get the bait to do the same, turn and run.

BOATING SAFETY

Thursday, October 11th, 2012

For anyone who wants to fish and do it from a boat it is important to learn boat safety. Boat safety has become a big issue in the past couple of years and just like cars and driving it is important to know how to navigate your boat and understand boating rules and regulations. Today more than ever enforcement officers are watching out for those that lack the knowledge of basic boating regulations. Safe boating is paramount especially since there are more and more boats on the water today. For those that are not sure of where to learn the basic boating rules and regulations there are several classes that are available from the United States Coast Guard, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and a few other approved trainers. Most boat shops will be able to direct you in the right direction and help you find boating classes that you can take. These classes can teach you everything from navigation to basic rules to boat handling. Safe boating is not just important for you but those in your boat and others that are around you as well. Many states today require you to take a boating class before you can be on the water and operating a boat. There have been too many accidents from negligible boat owners and Captains as of late and the classes might just be the difference in preventing a simple accident and or saving your life while out on the water ways.
